GRASKOP METEOROLOGICALLY SPEAKING

On the face of it, it may seem strange that a tourist destination would “brag” about being the wettest town in the country, but once you’ve read to the end of this article, it may make more sense than before.

The wettest place in the country is God’s Window (7 km away from Graskop – as the crow flies) where the average annual rainfall is over 3000mm. Graskop has an average rainfall of over 2500mm, most of which falls in the summer months (between November and March) in the form of thunderstorms of heroic proportions. There are also wonderfully misty days, which enhance the inherent feeling of mystery, which is part of the charm of this “Great Mpumalanga Escarpment”.

Autumn and spring surround winter with a magnificent display of beautifully balmy days, when the thunderstorms and misty days become less and more infrequent as the days wax and wane.

Comes winter with its crisp cold nights – eminently suitable for conversation or games in front of a roaring fire! – and it’s wonderfully sunshine filled days, when even nature revels in its ability to enjoy its own version of slumber time – without really going to sleep.

So! Whether it’s rainy or misty; sunshiny or stormy; hot or cold; the ever-changing moods, which accompany the change in seasons, will delight and astound you.
